Memphis is home to a lot of things: mouthwatering barbecue; world-class entertainment; the No. 1 busiest cargo airport in America; and performance savvy ducks who call the Peabody Hotel their home.
Well now, you can add Bass Pro’s Hunting Mega-Store to the list. At a whopping 535,000 square feet, this store is more than just a place to buy a shirt or some camping gear. This is one of the largest retail shops in the world.
To start with, it’s housed inside a giant, 32-story pyramid in Memphis. At 321 feet tall it’s considered to be the seventh largest pyramid in the world. The pyramid opened in 1991 and at one point served as the home for the University of Memphis men’s basketball team and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Beyond all the outdoor gear, supplies and accessories one could ever dream of, there’s a floating dock, an island, an aviary and zip line stations.
There’s a Waterfowl Museum as a salute to Ducks Unlimited, a restaurant, bowling alley, cypress swamp with live alligators and even a hotel. And to see it all? Hop on the central elevator, which currently holds the title of the tallest freestanding elevator in America.
Governor Haslam joined Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. to officially open Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid and even did a little shopping himself. Gov. Haslam was the first customer at the Beretta Gallery inside the mega shop. Beretta is in the process of building a new $45 million manufacturing and research and development facility in Sumner County. The Gallatin location will eventually house all of their manufacturing operations.
