Automotive supplier to invest $35.8 million, create 70 new jobs

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe and U.S. Tsubaki Automotive, LLC officials announced today that the auto supplier will undergo a major expansion in Portland.

U.S. Tsubaki will invest approximately $35.8 million and create 70 new jobs over the next five years in Sumner County.

“Tennessee has established itself as a premier destination for automotive manufacturers and suppliers thanks to our skilled workforce, business-friendly climate and central location,” Rolfe said. “Since 2011, Tennessee’s broader manufacturing sector has added nearly 45,000 jobs, the sixth highest figure nationwide. I’m pleased that U.S. Tsubaki has chosen to expand in Portland and create new job opportunities for the residents in Sumner County.”

U.S. Tsubaki, which manufactures drive trains and other automotive parts, plans to construct a 250,000-square-foot-facility in Portland. Once complete in late 2018, U.S. Tsubaki plans to move its existing Portland operations into the new facility.

“U.S. Tsubaki is pleased to announce the expansion in Portland,” Tim Goble, general manager of U.S. Tsubaki, said. “The expansion positions us to support continued growth and bring additional manufacturing jobs to the local community. Our success is largely due to the dedication and hard work of the employees. U.S. Tsubaki would like to thank the State of Tennessee, the City of Portland, Sumner County, TDOT, TVA and the Portland Industrial Development Board for all their continued support.”

U.S. Tsubaki supplies major automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in North America such as General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and others.

Local officials and the Tennessee Valley Authority applauded U.S. Tsubaki for its plans to expand in Sumner County.

“Portland was honored to welcome U.S. Tsubaki to our community in 1987 and happy to assist its past expansion in 2012,” Portland Mayor Ken Wilber said. “U.S. Tsubaki has been a dedicated civic partner. Growth within our existing industry represents economic sustainability and a business-friendly atmosphere. We are thrilled to have U.S. Tsubaki continue to choose Portland for its growth and it is our hope for the company’s continued success in the community and the great State of Tennessee.

“TVA and Cumberland Electric EMC congratulate U.S. Tsubaki on its decision to expand operations in Portland, Tennessee,” TVA Senior Vice President of Economic Development John Bradley said. “We are pleased to partner with the City of Portland and Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development to support existing business growth in the Valley.”

Portland and Sumner County are represented by Sen. Ferrell Haile (R – Gallatin), Rep. William Lamberth (R – Cottontown), Rep. Courtney Rogers (R – Goodlettsville) and Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver (R – Lancaster) in the Tennessee General Assembly.
